Adobe Lightroom Is A Professional Photographer's Best Friend
Ask any random sampling of people which Adobe products they use—or
are at least familiar with—and you’ll likely hear things like Flash,
Reader, and Photoshop. However, in certain fields, Adobe is much, much
more than just those three products. If you ask professional
photographers, many will tell you that the tool they rely on more than
any other is Adobe Lightroom.
Photoshop seems to get all of the attention, and has entered the
general lexicon as a verb that refers to doctoring an image. There are
entire websites and Internet memes dedicated to showcasing horrible Photoshop mistakes.
Lightroom, on the other hand, generally has a much more subtle
impact. Lightroom gives photographers the tools they need to clean up
and process images—to take a digital photo from a RAW image from a DSLR,
to the beautiful, framed eight-by-ten picture on your wall.
I asked a number of professional photographers how they use
Lightroom, and how important it is to their work. Before we get to that,
though, let’s do a brief overview of Lightroom, and the features that
are new to the current version—Lightroom 5.
About Lightroom 5
Lightroom has had some pretty slick tricks up its proverbial sleeve
for awhile, but Adobe still had a few new surprises for Lightroom 5.
Here are some of the key features that are new in Lightroom 5
· Smart Previews – A RAW image from a high-end DSLR results in a
fairly massive file. Smart Previews lets you create smaller alias
versions of select photos so you can take them with you without having
to work with your entire Lightroom library. More importantly, and
adjustments you make to the image, or changes to the metadata are
automatically synced back and applied to the original image.
· Radial Gradient – This feature gives the photographer more control
over vignette effects, enabling them to highlight and emphasize the area
(or areas) of the image they want to stand out.
· Upright – To some, having lines that are slightly askew may seem
“artsy”, but for most professional photographers it just drives them
crazy. The Upright feature analyzes the image to detect skewed vertical
or horizontal lines, and it can automatically shift the picture to
straighten everything out.
· Advanced Healing Brush – As a novice on the outside looking in,
this is the feature that seems the most mind blowing to me. The Advanced
Healing Brush is intended for things like removing a spec of dust, or
an errant hair or thread. It can remove the offending object, and
automagically fill in the void with what should have been behind it
based on the surrounding image. What is truly amazing about this
feature, though, is that it can be used to remove entire people from a
photo—and magically fill in the spot they used to occupy as if they were
never there.
Photographers Weigh In
When I asked a group of
professional photographers how important Lightroom is to their work, the responses I received were fairly unanimous.
Leah Jent, a
photographer in Ohio,
explained, “I love Lightroom–and I say that after years of not really
getting all the hype. “What is the big deal?” But now I’m so glad I have
it!”
“It took me a good five years to really sit down and get to know Lightroom,” said
Carolyn Spranger,
adding “But, now that I have I can’t see not having it as part of my
workflow. Once I got out of my comfort zone and past the learning curve I
realized how much time it saves me.”
Finally,
Rachael Steele told
me, she was initially intimidated by Lightroom, but after putting it
off a couple years she took a class to learn how to use it. Now she
says, “I honestly could not live without it! It has sped up my
post-processing time immensely!”
Most photographers follow a fairly routine workflow when
processing photos after a shoot. After importing them to Lightroom, they
begin by culling—deleting photos that are obviously bad, and just don’t
make the cut. You can also use Lightroom to compare similar photos to
choose which ones stay, and which ones to pitch.
Lightroom has tools to help streamline each step of the
post-processing effort. The one thing that really helps expedite things
are the process presets—essentially templates that can be applied to a
photo which can automatically create desired effects. The ability to use
presets to process really speeds things up and helps accelerate the
workflow so you can get a finished, professional photo faster.
To be fair, there were a couple photographers who said they don’t use
Lightroom. However, judging from the responses of some of those who
rely on the software, it seems that their opinion might change if they
dove in and got comfortable with it.
Before making the transition to Lightroom, the photographers I
surveyed relied on different tools, and a more tedious workflow process.
Sarah Boccolucci told me that she used to convert each RAW file to DNG format in a separate converter tool, and the edit them using Photoshop
Express . “It took forever!” she exclaimed.
The Radial Gradient Filter is the favorite feature of Lightroom 5
among the photographers who responded, with the Advanced Healing Brush
coming in a close second for some.
Adobe Lightroom is a somewhat complex application that is not
intended for your average consumer shooting pictures of a birthday party
with a point-and-shoot camera or smartphone. For professional
photographers, though, it is virtually indispensible.
